DESERT ISLAND MOTOWN

A self-explanatory 80-minute CD compilation of personal Motown favourites from both well-known and lesser known artists recording for Berry Gordy's Detroit-based labels (Tamla, Motown, Gordy, Soul etc.). Some have been my favourite track by a particular artist ever since they were released (Come See About Me, Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever, Ooo Baby Baby). I remember buying some of these as 7" singles when they were released in the UK, in the familiar orange Tamla Motown paper sleeves, or even earlier when they came out on labels like Stateside and Oriole. It was necessary to confine myself to Early and Middle period Motown, so I gave myself a cut-off point of 1968. Obviously, this excludes some bona fide classics from the likes of Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Undisputed Truth and so forth, but also means that they have that Motown sound stamped solidly on each one, thanks to the brilliant playing of the Funk Brothers
